The Pickle Ingredients
Check out our full breakdown in this article to fully understand how a cucumber becomes a pickle. The basic premise to a pickle is vinegar, seasonings and the item being pickled. The type of vinegar used along with the spice profile is what defines the flavor and overall taste of the pickle you are making. Below is what we will need to begin.
Pickling Cucumber
Pickling cucumbers are the go to for pickles for a variety of reasons. First, they have harder skin which allows them to retain a crunch and hold up in the vinegar based brine. They are also uniform, allowing the brine to affect all pickles in an even manner. Lastly, they are a great size for snacking and eating on their own. They can be found in most grocery stores.
Apple Cider and White Vinegar
We are using these two vinegars because of their tartness and flavor. The white vinegar brings the very tart, sour flavor that we all love in a pickle. The apple cider vinegar on the other hand brings fruity notes and another level of flavor to compliment the spicy Cajun seasoning.
McCormick Cajun Seasoning
Of all of the spice companies, McCormick is one of the best when it comes to flavor and consistency. Their blend of cayenne, bell peppers, black pepper and other spices is what elevates this blend and is why I am such a fan of it.
Garlic Cloves
Garlic is a great flavor addition to pickles as it gives an added aroma and taste that makes the pickle almost savory. Garlic plays a big role in Cajun cooking and just makes sense in this flavor profile.
Mustard Seed
A small amount of mustard seed goes a long way. I like to add it into give that briny, tart flavor that really balances against the apple cider vinegar to bring a beautiful contrast.
Water
The base of the pickle brine that will bring it all together.
